QUESTIONS FOR KIDS [10]
“TV ADDICTION”
updated 980711
Is TV like a drug?
The little boy Calvin reads to his toy tiger Hobbes: “It says here that ‘Religion is the opiate of the masses.’... What do you suppose that means?” — The TV set is thinking: “... it means that Karl Marx hadn't seen anything yet.”
— Now Calvin is watching TV and Hobbes asks: ”What are you watching?”
— “Garbage. This show would insult a 6 year old! And I should know.”
— “So why watch it?”
— Calvin: “All the other shows are even worse!”
— Hobbes: “Why watch TV at all then?”
— “There is nothing to do.”
— “NOTHING TO DO?! You could read a book! or write a letter! or take a walk!”
and Hobbes continues: “When you are old, you will wish that you had more than memories of this tripe to look back on.”
— Calvin: “Undoubtedly.”
Then they both fall silent, Hobbes sits down next to Calvin, and they watch TV together.
