Well, in my class the kids learn that just as you put
letters, not words, together to spell words, what you put together to spell
numbers is not correctly called numbers, but...

do: twenty
three. In English that's eleven letters (in
Spanish, French, or Portuguese it would be 10 letters, in Italian 8, in
